All too frequently, "Historic preservation" is perceived as a domain reserved for safeguarding the legacy of a privileged few. Unfortunately, this perception often rings true. However, in the United States, we believe in the principle of equal treatment for all, and it's time our approach to preservation reflects this ethos.
At the American Institute of Historic Preservation, we are committed to transforming this narrative. We are pioneering efforts to broaden the scope of preservation, ensuring it encapsulates the rich and diverse heritage of our nation in its entirety. But our mission extends beyond merely preserving sites; we aim to foster a culture of inclusivity where every citizen feels empowered to partake in preservation activities.
Our initiatives support the preservation of sites that speak to the experiences of diverse groups of Americans — from the affluent to the less fortunate. We believe every story, every piece of history, holds value and contributes to the tapestry of our national heritage. But our work doesn't stop there.
We also aim to recognize and uplift the many diverse contributors to the field of preservation. These are the individuals and communities tirelessly working to keep our history alive through the preservation of historic buildings. Their dedication deserves recognition and support.
In essence, we are not just preserving buildings; we are preserving stories, memories, and the very fabric of our national identity. We understand that to truly honor our past, we must ensure our preservation efforts are as diverse and inclusive as the history they seek to protect. This is the future of preservation, and we are proud to be leading the way.
